Offensive Fireworks Abound In UC Win Over Wright State

Cincinnati closed out its non-conference baseball season in style, blasting a season-high six homers en route to a 13-7 win over Wright State on Tuesday night in Marge Schott Stadium. The triumph, UC's 33rd of the year against 19 losses, leaves the Bearcats with just a three-game series against West Virginia remaining on the 2008 regular season docket. With help, the Bearcats are still alive in the hunt for their first-ever BIG EAST Championship.

Cincinnati will open a regular season-concluding four-game homestand when the Bearcats take on area rival Wright State on Tuesday night at Marge Schott Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. UC, which has already clinched a spot in next week's BIG EAST Championship, brings a 32-19 record into the contest, the second of the season against the Raiders. The Bearcats took two of three over the weekend at Seton Hall to hold onto sole possession of third place in the BIG EAST standings. A victory against Wright State (27-19) will bring the Bearcats within two of matching the single season wins total of 35 established in 2000. Wright State will be out to avenge a 9-5 defeat to the Bearcats on April 9.

With the 2008 regular season winding down, Cincinnati heads to South Orange, N.J. to take on Seton Hall in BIG EAST baseball action this weekend (May 9-11). With a convincing 20-3 win over Mount St. Joseph on Tuesday night, UC secured its second 30-win campaign in the last three years, bringing a 30-18 overall mark to the East Coast. In conference action, the Bearcats stand in third place in the league standings at 14-7, just one game ahead of a fourth place tie between Seton Hall (28-18, 13-8 BIG EAST) and Louisville. Action gets underway under the lights at Owen T. Carroll Field on Friday at 6 p.m., with matinees on tap for Saturday (1 p.m.) and Sunday (Noon) afternoons.

Antione Drakeford was named the BIG EAST Most Outstanding Track Performer in leading the University of Cincinnati men's team to a fourth-place finish at the 2008 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships on Sunday at Jumbo Elliot Track at Villanova Stadium. The Bearcat men totalled 80 points, finishing behind champion Notre Dame, UConn and Louisville. The women posted 43 points to finish 10th.
