University of Cincinnati volleyball signee Missy Harpenau has been named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) High School Senior Girl's All-America Team. The 6-0 outside hitter, who was named the National Player of the Year by PrepVolleyball.com last month, led Mother of Mercy to the 2007 Division I state championship, defeating city rival Mount Notre Dame.

The 2007 season draws to a close for University of Cincinnati volleyball over the Thanksgiving weekend as the Bearcats take part in the 29th annual Community Bankers Classic in Stockton, Calif. The Bearcats (18-11) are shooting for their 13th consecutive 20-win season, but will need to win both weekend contests. UC is coming off a disappointing opening round loss in the BIG EAST Championship to Notre Dame last week. The Bearcats will look to close 2007 on a high note, opening the tournament on Friday (Nov. 23) against Saint Mary's. Depending on Friday's outcomes, UC will battle either Fresno State or the tournament host, Pacific on Saturday.

A season-high 18.5 team blocks weren't enough as Cincinnati's trip to the 2007 BIG EAST Championship came to an early end at the hands of Notre Dame in a quarterfinal match on Friday at the Al McGuire Center. UC couldn't overcome a two games to none deficit, in falling by scores of 26-30, 24-30, 30-23, 24-30. UC, seeded fifth for the event, fell to the fourth-seeded Irish for the second time in a seven-day span and was eliminated from the BIG EAST Championship by Notre Dame for the third straight year.

That history got a new chapter on Thursday evening as freshman Stephanie Niemer and junior Jessie Nevitt were recognized among the BIG EAST's best at the awards banquet kicking off the annual conference championship. Niemer was the big winner, taking home league Freshman of the Year, while also earning a spot on the all-BIG EAST second team. Nevitt, meanwhile, was named to the all-BIG EAST first team for the third straight year.

Notre Dame, the preseason favorite to win the league is 13-12. This marks the third consecutive season the teams have met in the league tournament, with the Irish winning both prior meetings.
